A peony is carved with the use of a comb-like tool in the middle of the dish. The blossom appears full and vivacious with the flanking leaves. The curves are carved smoothly, and the combing on the petals renders plasticity, thus augmenting the sense of growth and aesthetics. A poem composed by the Qian-long Emperor is inscribed on the base, and it praises that the quality of Ding wares is unmatched by that of Cizhou wares of Pengzheng. The carved floral motifs render a vibrant image, and it is more remarkable than Hetian jade.
