Description:
This stembowl has a flared rim, deep rounded sides, and a high, hollow foot. It is glazed white, with three fish in underglaze red decorating the exterior. The fish heads are oval in shape and they are held up. Their chubby bodies gravitate, and their large, rounded tails roll upward. The interior is vaguely incised with two dragons, which are hardly recognizable. The red pigment is fresh and splendid, and large and small bubbles distribute sparsely within this shiny yet opaque glaze. The clear glaze shows a blue tinge, and it pools in the foot. The body is rather thick, but fine and smooth. The center shows the reign mark - "made in the Xuande period of Great Ming" -- in two columns, regular script within a double ring.
