Description:
Made of translucent green jade, one side shows a grayish tinge and dark brown specks. The jade is incised and carved in sgraffito and low relief. The deep incision reveals a ditch, which positions and structures the motifs. The deep incision in combination with light incision creates a spatial and light-and-shadow effect. The application of these two techniques is a innovation of the Han jade carving. Sgraffito is mainly used to render grain and spiral patterns.Three flat, circular ridges separate the disc into three regions. The inner region is the hole, the middle region is decorated with spiral patterns, and the outer region is decorated with four sets of animal masks. The edge of the disc is inscribed with a poem composed by emperor Qianlong. The spiral patterns are a deviation or abbreviation of the grain patterns.
