Description:
The piece is made of duan stone and imitates the shape of a gourd and its leaves. Reddish brown in color, the inkstone has a fine and glossy surface blended with a pattern caused naturally by the dark-red pigment revealed from the inkstone. The entire inkstone is encased by the sculpted pattern of spiraling rattan and leaves stretching out from the sides. There are two greenish yellow pebbles situated on the upper part of the inkstone. Underneath the leaves, there is a long-headed grasshopper, and among the leaves, there is a smooth area that serves as the ink-face. A poem by Qianlong is found on a brownish yellow leaf situated on the upper left hand, concluded by an endorsement and two seals. The back of the inkstone is decorated with three gourds of different sizes and four pebbles. Underneath the leaves, there is a smooth area also can be used as ink-face. On the biggest gourd, an inscription in li-shu (square style) is found. The inscription writes, "A precious collection for amusement by Jinbao studio."
