Autumn Colors on the Qiao and Hua Mountains has been recognized as a blue-and-green landscape executed in the style of wenren hua, or literati-style painting. Zhao Mengfu uses cyanid pigments mixed with mineral blue-green pigments for the two host mountains. The resulting pale blue differs from the light color of the islet as well as from the many delicate colors of the foliage, in effect generating great chromatic variety. The sloping riverbank and the area near the foreground water are an ochre color; while rooftops, tree trunks and foliage make use of red, yellow, and ochre hues. In his use of these warm colors and the cyanid blue-green, Zhao Mengfu demonstrates his skill in manipulating complementary colors. The result is exceptionally apt. The mineral blue-green conveys a sense of the translucency of a clean autumn coolness that is refreshing to the mind. But with the complementary colors, it also exudes an elegance and untrammeled quality that is both satisfying and harmonious. Autumn Colors on the Qiao and Hua Mountains expresses a kind of neutral tranquility, and not a lonely or desolate bleakness. This quality is one of the conceptions propounded by the literati painting. The ink and colors of the entire painting are harmoniously combined. In depicting these famous mountains in his autumn thoughts, Zhao Mengfu gives the appreciative spectator a complete dream vision of a distant, home village.
