Description:
Shen Zhou (1427-1502) is from Changzhou (today's Suzhou in Jiangsu province). His style name is Qinan, and his hao, Shitian [Field of stones]. He is also called "Baishi weng" [Old man of the white rock], and he is the son of Huanji. His paintings of landscape, flowers, birds, and fish have been judged marvelous. Shen Zhou is also skilled in calligraphy and poetry, and known as one of the four great masters of the Ming Dynasty. It has been said that until the age of forty, Shen Zhou solely painted small-scale works. Only later did he begin to paint larger compositions. Lofty Mount Lu was done in the Chenghua reign era, the dinghai year (1467) and dates to Shen's forty-first year. By imitating the brushwork of Wang Meng, Shen Zhou departs from his usual style and gives his own work a more turbid though simple and robust feel. He first paints the mountain and rocks with light ink, and then he layers darker ink to give shape to his subjects. The luminescence of the clouds and the coloring of the mountains are exquisite. Shen Zhou's teacher was Chen Kuan, and this painting was done in honor of latter's seventieth birthday. Thus, Shen put extra effort into painting Lofty Mount Lu, making it an especially outstanding work.
