Description:
|
This painting depicts altogether five figures. The old monk reclining on a couch with his left hand grasping a fly whisk is an eloquent conversationalist. Across from him, the bookish fellow wearing yellow is Xiao Yi. In the upper portion of the painting, another monk sits cross-legged. To the left side, two servants brew tea. One has a whiskered face, the other is a youth wearing his hair loose. Xiao Yi Trying to Swipe the Lanting Scroll depicts a scene of discussion in the middle of the story. Because images cannot record sounds, the painter must use the "language of gestures" in conveying the story through the figures. The "Lanting Scroll" also known as the Orchid Pavilion Scroll, is a famous work of prose and calligraphy by Wang Xizhi (307-365), who is considered China's most important calligrapher.
