Description:
A set of Yixing teapots painted with famille rose made in the Kangxi period is in excellent condition. Each one of them is finely painted in the Western oil painting tradition. In the late Kangxi period, the mandarins were enthusiasts of famille rose, and they initiated a series of research on this material. Then, the artisans realized that famille rose adhered better to coarser surface. Hence, Yixing potters sent a set of teapots and covered bowls to the palace to be enameled with famille rose. .The ground color of the teapot is the clay's natural color, though the cover's knob, spout, and handle are coated with a brown glaze. The teapot is in the form of a flower with four petals. The rim of the cover shows a band of rolled petals, framing a yellow hibiscus. The veins of its petals are drawn meticulously and smoothly. The four sides of the teapot illustrate a peony with a blossom, in which the layering of petals and their distinction from leaves are clear.
