Description:
|
This is a wine vessel with a round opening and a square body. The most unusual elements of its appearance are two elephant noses erecting from the belly. They function as handles, and the tip of their noses are pointing downward. Below the handles are pendants also decorated as small elephant noses with the tip of their noses pointing up.The belly is divided into three registers: on the neck are ram-like animal motifs, on the belly are long and horned animal masks, and on the foot are pairs of birds confronting each other. On the whole, the vessel gives the impression of robustness and exquisiteness. An inscription of fourteen characters in three columns is carved in the inner center of the belly. They indicate that an official named fu made this vessel in order to one day worship his father.
