Description:

This square zun is round on top and square on the bottom. Its shape is grand and elegant, and the entire vessel is covered in animal masks and bird patterns. Flanges with openwork rise up from the mouth. The whole vessel appears in greenish encrustations.A hundred sixty some characters are inscribed on the bottom of this vessel. In short, the text describes that the Zhou emperor orders Mingbao, the son of the duke of Zhou, to become the magistrate. Later he appointed Mingbao to govern the city of Luoyang. Zeling was record keeping official under Mingbao. After an extensive sacrificial ceremony, he was given wine, gold, and cows. In gratitude, he cast this vessel to commemorate his father ding.
