Description:
Because the lid is closely fitted to provide a tight shut, the lid and the vessel no longer have to be connected by a chain of small interlocking rings like they did previously in Erligang and early Yingxu. This transition is a significant trend of development in Yingxu. The cross section of this vessel is a circle. Using the pattern as a reference point, the two ends of the swing handle each has one animal mask that is placed exactly in the nose bridge of the animal mask motif of the vessel. The lid is decorated with animal mask and its rim is decorated with gui dragons. The belly is decorated with gui dragons and animal masks, all with thunder pattern as backgrounds. The vessel is divided into four sections with protruding flanges. The shape and pattern of the flanges conform to the style of the late Shang. The underside of the vessel has a pattern of crisscross lines in relief. Identical inscription of one character is on the inner wall of the lid and the vessel. It possibly indicates the clan sign.
