Description:
|
he green jade shows yellowish brown and red streaks that are common among extant green jades. The plain half-disc has an imperfect contour and surface of uneven thickness. The hole in the middle is small, and it is drilled from one side. The drilled edge is wider on one side than the other, and it is trumpet-shaped. One side contains a poem entitled, "The Magnificent Half-Disc," composed by the Qianlong emperor, and the other side has three squared seal marks. This half-disc is obviously cut from a large jade disc of the width of 39.3cm. As the jade artisans of the Qing court often cut ancient jade discs in half, it is possible that this disc was cut into half by them. Moreover, the fact that the straight edge of the disc shows a fresher color suggests that it was likely the case.
