Description:
The first thing we see in Travellers among Mountains and Streams is the towering "host" mountain, occupying two-thirds of the composition at the painting's very center. A waterfall in a deep ravine to the right is balanced by a smaller mountain at the left. Behind the two large boulders in the central foreground, travellers make their way along the sloping path. They are the subject of the painting. In the middle ground, a stream separates two massifs. The dense foliage of deciduous and coniferous trees gives way to reveal the buildings of a magnificent temple. Mist in the middle ground effectively conceals the base of the host mountain, reinforcing the imposing manner of that peak. The composition of this painting is not especially complex, but the details are executed quite carefully, revealing the artist's keen powers of observation and his skill in creating a faithful representation.
