Description:

At the beginning of this long handscroll, we see a fair amount of fog. Many mountains and misty trees in the distance are followed by a sudden spaciousness. A watery landscape of riverbanks long and short, mountain peaks great and small-all are encircled by mist. It lifts and gathers from time to time, occasionally thick, sometimes thin. Through it, we can see temples and palaces, as well as fishermen and woodcutters going about their business. In the central portion of the painting, the mountain peaks form a screen and press close to the picture plane. Mountain paths wind around beckoning us to journey deep into the landscape. At the end of the scroll the view opens again allowing us to lose ourselves in the far distance.
