Description:
A top a lofty mountain crag, three pines stand together. In the shadows below, a temple rooftop and city walls can be seen. Near the cliff that is covered thickly with grasses, a stone path winds around to the city wall. At the lower right of the painting, two figures-a priest and his companion--carry bundles of books, making their way along the circuitous route. At the lower left, we can see Jia Shigu's signature. The remainder of the silk represents sky and water, which meet at the distant, limitless horizon. This type of composition emphasizes the contrast between the presence of the foreground landscape and the void of the sky and water. In Temple by the Cliff Pass, the artist has used heavy ink and a short brush to depict the land, which contrasts with the pale blue washes he has used for the sky. In some places of the composition, he has left the original color of the silk exposed. The resulting void seems distant and obscure, producing a dynamic effect next to the painted scenery.
