Description:

In The Three Laughers of Tiger Stream, a gust of wind causes the branches of red-leafed trees to sway and leaves to drift and fall filling the ground below. At the left of the stone bridge, a Buddhist monk, a Daoist priest, and a Confucian scholar embrace and bid each other farewell. Standing in the middle, Hui Yuan embraces Lu Xiujing in a gesture of farewell. Tao Yuanming uses both hands to reach out to Hui Yuan. The three raise their heads, laughing heartily--seldom are such lively mannerisms seen. To the left and right, two male servants wait in attendance. According to the "The Three Laughers of Tiger Stream" story from the "Record of Lu Mountain","Hui Yuan, the Buddhist priest, lived at Lu Mountain for over thirty years, his shadow never leaving, his footprints never seen. When sending guests over Tiger Stream, the tiger always called. In the past, Tao Yuanliang [Tao Yuanming] lived at Lili and Lu Xiujing, a Daoist priest, at the mountain's south. Once, when sending these two people off, Priest Yuan chatted all along the way. In so doing, he did not realize he had crossed the bridge, and so laughed heartily." In this is a legendary story of the Song Dynasty, Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism are grouped together, uniting the three schools as one. The artist has used this as the subject of his painting.
