Description:

In Duck on a Riverbank, Chen Lin depicts an autumn pond in one corner with a hibiscus hanging diagonally and a duck standing near the water looking into the distance. The full-bodied duck is painted with a wash of cyanid blue pigment, the feathers on its backs dense, the use of the brush very fine and detailed. To embellish the painting, the artist has drawn more roughly, abbreviated hibiscus, water ripples, and rocks along the bank. These elements all borrow from the techniques and styles of writing calligraphy. It has been suggested that these portions of the painting were done by Zhao Mengfu.Duck on a Riverbank is without a signature. According to a record by Zhao Mengfu's, "Chen Zhongmei [Chen Lin] did this painting playfully. Recent painters cannot measure up to this." And, the poet Qiu Yuan comments, "In the autumn of the fifth year of the Dade reign era, xinchou year (1301), Zhongmei [Chen Lin] called on Master Zi'ang [Zhao Mengfu] at his Yuying Pine Snow Studio in Yuying. The frosty was clear, and the stream like jade--just like lifeā¦. Zi'ang added some moist color for embellishment" Thus, we know that Chen Lin painted this work when he went to visit the Pine Snow Studio. Zhao Mengfu lavished praise and himself added some painted elements to Duck on a Riverbank.
