A native of Changzhou in Jiangsu province, Wen Zhengming (1470-1559) is known primarily by his style name (Zhengming) rather than his given name, Bi. His other names include Zhengzhong, Tingyunsheng, and Hengshanjushi. He excelled at poetry, literature, calligraphy and painting. As a group, Shen Zhou, Tang Yin,Qiu Ying, and he are known as the "Four Great Masters of the Ming Dynasty" In painting, Wen Zhengming followed Shen Zhou, but later he developed a successful, individual style. He left an indelible impact on later Ming Dynasty painting.Beneath the pine trees, two scholars sit cross-legged near a stream. Leaving the dust of the world behind, they talk between themselves. A youth carrying a qin zither emerges from behind the pines. The mountain cliff conveys a majestic air in its precipitous appearance. The brushwork has an unusual quality like cloud formations, evidence that Wen Zhengming's wields the brush in a powerful manner. Upright pine trees with their needles and branches overlapping helter-skelter attract our eye. We can also distinguish a two-step painting process in the Wen's skillful distribution of different ink tonalities. Among areas of light ink, there will also be dark. Within the quiet elegance of the painting, we can appreciate the simplicity of Wen's style.
