Description:
|
This brush-holder is sculpted from a piece of flat and dark brown bamboo. Two ends are each affixed to a wood piece to form an opened rim and a closed bottom. There are four foot-knobs sculpted from the bottom piece of wood. In the illustration on the wood piece, the personae has clothing, hair styles, and accessories alluding to three characters: Liu Be who wears an official hat, Guang Yunzhang who has a wide face with long bead, and Zhang Fei who wears a sword on his waist. They are the three brothers in Stories of the Warring period. This illustration depicts a famous scenario in the book where the three brothers visited the great sage, Zhu Gelan, three times before they could meet with Zhu.
