Description:
|
This mirror case is made of two leaves of red elm wood connected in the style of bookbinding, a technique which dates back to Tang dynasty. The inner part of the leaves is attached with a piece of yellow poplar wood. The right leaf is decorated with a picture in the middle, and the sides are decorated with the fretted pattern, a persimmon plant, flower, and a butterfly. The picture bears the name, "the auspicious picture." The picture is composed of a two-platform table with the fretted pattern on the legs. On the higher platform, there is a vase with day-lilies and purple asters. On the other platform, there is a fruit plate with peaches and Buddhist hands (a citric tangerine). A Ruyi lies on front of the table. Next to the table, there is a birdcage with the scarlet bird (finch) in it. The left leaf is inlaid with a mirror whose silver plate is chipping.
