Description:
|
This brush-holder is made of three separate pieces of ivory: the holder's body, the holder's stand, and the stand-rest (made of a slab of ivory). All three parts are joined. The carving on the holder is complicated and is composed of two sets of activity. The first set is a chess-match and the second is the women's outing. Between the two sets of activities, there are other observable activities. Two men are on a higher elevation: one is leaning again a stone table in front a little hut, and another one is sculpting a tile house. In front of the hut, there is an old man brushing his beard. There are plants growing among these persons and activities. The overall ground of the piece is carved with the pattern of ancient coins.
