Description:
A Ruyi with three inlays on a red stand made of sandalwood. The head is inlaid with an elliptical white jade on which a picture is lightly embossed. The picture depicts three longans (a fruit) held together by flowing girdles and a magpie to symbolize three good news of examinations (represented by the longans in the picture) to come (represented by the magpie that brings the good news). The first good news is becoming the first in the civil examination held at the imperial court. The second good news is becoming the first in the civil examination held among the provinces. The third good news is becoming first in the civil examinations held among the rural areas. The picture wishes the literati to receive good news after their examinations. The stem and tip are inlaid with elliptical white jade slabs that are lightly embossed with magpies, lingzhi, and flowering patterns. Bulged in the center, the stem is decorated with butterfly-shaped shells. Round shells are found on the stem' s sides. Each of the inlay-stands has gold-gilt frame and decorated with round shells. The middle is decorated with chased mahogany flowers and butterflies. Mahogany is deemed to expel evil spirits, and its fruit, legendarily, take 3000 years to mature. The back is blank.
