Description:
The pictorial illustration on this holder depicts a group of cloistered virtuous sages living in a bamboo grove during eastern Jin period (300 to 400 AD). This illustration is a typical depiction of the psychology of literati who lament that they are not being recognized for their talents. Usually, they are critical of secular events and stress spiritual betterment. For a long time, this motif of literati has been widely used in literary and artistic creation. Since the sculptor's carving and sculpting technique is mature, the sense of depth inside the bamboo wood is conveyable.
