Description:
A piece of sandalwood is chased into the shape of a Ruyi. The chased-work has multiple layers and imitates a literary motif, "the trilogy of friend" originated from Lunyu. Lunyuzi says, "A good friend has three qualities. A bad friend has three qualities." Poets in the later years have used different metaphors (such as liquor, pine tree, bamboo, cloud and mountain, or poem, etc.) to exemplify the three good qualities. In this piece, the trilogy is represented by a pine tree, bamboo, and a plum tree. The head is elliptical and decorated with the immortal of longevity riding the immortal crane. The stem, flat and slightly carved, is mortised with the head. The stem surface is inscribed with a phrase, "Eight immortals making birthday wishes." The back curved in. The tip is attached with a pair of yellow tassels, and a decorative knot. Note: "Eight immortals making birthday wishes" is an auspicious phrase and has already been widely used as early as the fourteenth century. In a decorative design where the Eight immortals and the immortal of longevity are used, it is usually called "Wishes from the gathering immortals."
